I love this, and I've also been thinking about how much work it is to unlearn this, since this is how many practitioners speak casually. Moving towards an astrology of radical self-acceptance, as well as being more grounded as I share my thoughts has helped.
Right!! It's a lot of work for sure! Appreciate your input on this. Your work on the 6th House has been so very impactful on me re: self-acceptance and general reframing of "traditional" delineations.
Great read with fantastic points made! I couldn’t agree more, and it serves as a great reminder to step back from the practice every now and then to just let life happen without knowing the how or when of it all. Also, your mention of looking at astrology in retrospect is something I began doing last year when I got back into my practice after a loooong hiatus. It has helped me so much in understanding transits and helping my clients understanding their own timing without getting too predictive.
This was great. I’ve been studying for years, and it started for better understanding myself—now for others, but I do see bypassing within astrology as with other spiritual modalities. I hadn’t quite put the words to it. Your summary was thorough—and clearly through your lived experience. Thank you for sharing your work and your translation from your native tongue.
Definitely agree astrology (and spirituality in general) should not be used for bypassing, confirmation bias, or delegation of personal power. We as practitioners carry an important responsibility in the way we teach and talk.
I’ve had countless clients come to me and say another astrologer made them fear for their health or fertility etc., and they gave so much power away to a stranger‘s opinion!
There is no widespread accreditation process for a 2.2 billion dollar industry, which means charlatans can slip through. I know so many astrologers with integrity who are conscious about the way they phrase their practice. We do exist. ❤️
I think similar issues can and do happen in industries with accreditations, fwiw, and I don't think it's solely a matter of charlatanism. I reckon people sometimes start with the best intentions and still mess up, so I'm not really interested in trying to categorise astrologers neatly as "with integrity" vs "charlatans". This really flattens the issue in my opinion, especially since people can change for the best with regards to these mechanisms; if I didn't believe that this could be the case, I don't think this article would be what it is. It's not about pointing the finger at people, it's about pointing out something that doesn't work for people. This is also not just about and for professional astrologers, but anyone interested in and practicing astrology.
I’ve spent years training and elevating new astrologers, so my comment was not meant to be divisive.
Frankly, in that time, I’ve seen people launch before they were ready and do more harm than good in readings that left a bad taste in a client‘s mouth.
Quality control can be an issue in any industry, you’re absolutely right, but astrology in particular is already up against so many misconceptions. It’s not the same thing as getting a second opinion on a shoulder injury; when someone receives a scary, harmful, or biased reading, they often write astrology off as a whole or think everyone is that way.
I commend you on calling out confirmation bias and bypassing from inside the practice, but we also already get labeled as such every single day by people who know nothing about it.
That’s why I believe the integrity of people giving readings is so important. Telling people only what they want to hear is just as bad as speaking in negative absolutes.
Thank you for clarifying! I wholesomely agree. There is a complicated tension between the profession / practice already being so vilified and ridiculed, and the real need for constructive criticism, for sure. I understand how many of us get defensive with the latter, but I really think it's crucial for actual integrity to be cultivated because it's never a done deal.
This is a great reflection on how over-astrologizing can be a way of escapism, evading ownership, putting the blame on the planets, reductionism, and yes, immersing in a feedback loop.
As always, I love your takes on topics like this!
This means a lot, thank you!! 🫶
This is brilliant and needs to be discussed at all levels of astrological (or other esoteric) practices. Thank you!
Thank you for this feedback, appreciate it!!
Indeed, astrology and other esoteric practices...

Great article. And thank you for your thoughtful writing, as a whole.
Thank you, appreciate the feedback very much!
